Pranayama Meditation Practice

Pranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning “extension of the prāṇa or breath” or “extension of the life force”. The word is composed from two Sanskrit words: prana meaning life force (noted particularly as the breath), and ayāma, to extend or draw out.  It is a yogic discipline with origins in ancient India. It is an excellent practice to calm the mind and prepare it for deeper meditation. There are several different types of Pranayama, but the simplest is the 4-4-4-4. This means breathing in counting up to 4, holding for 4 seconds, breathing out for 4 seconds, and holding empty for 4 seconds. Breathe through your nose, and let the abdomen be the one that moves.
